How to style your home on a budget

Guest blog by our resident interior designer Eliza.

We love creating fresh, new looks in our homes and spend countless hours scrolling Instagram feeds and websites of our favourite home décor brands. But, styling your home and updating your decorative accents doesn’t need to be expensive. Today we are sharing with you our top five tips for styling your home on a budget and how you can implement them today.

1.    Minimise Clutter

We wouldn’t be a home organisation blog if we didn’t start off with the obvious tip of decluttering, right? It is amazing how different your home can not only look but feel when you have minimised clutter and reduced the number of items within the space. Items such as vases, artwork, decorative accents, and books need breathing room to appreciate their beauty and allow the eyes to rest. We always recommend starting with one room at a time and focusing on completing the decluttering of each space before moving on to the next area. Remember to ask yourself if you truly love the item, if you have used it recently or if you see yourself using it in the near future. Once this process is complete then you can start the fun part of decorating and styling your home!

2.    Affordable Artwork

Artwork is an easy way to add colour, texture and interest in your home and create visual impact and wow factor within each space. Artwork can vary considerably in price, but today we are sharing with you our favourite ways to add wall art to your home on a budget. There are plenty of online stores that offer art prints in a variety of colours and designs to suit your style, with our favourite being Desenio. Whether you are after a minimal line drawing, an abstract look, or a beautiful photograph of nature, Desenio has you covered. We also love checking out the wide variety of small businesses on Etsy that offer downloadable prints that you can print yourself in your preferred size. Simply print at Officeworks, pick up an affordable frame from Kmart and you have yourself a beautiful statement art piece! There are plenty of other ways you can create art in your home such as framing beautiful printed wrapping paper, adding images from magazines or coffee table books to a frame or try your hand at creating an abstract artwork using your favourite colours on a canvas.

3.    Add Greenery And Plants

Plants can completely transform a room as they not only add a pop of colour to a space, but they breathe life into your home and filter impurities in the air. Keep an eye out for plant sales in your local area, head to small nurseries or check out your local Bunnings for some great deals on beautiful plants. One of our favourite ways to add plants to your home is by styling open shelves, console tables, and entertainment units with trailing plants such as devil’s ivy or pothos. In large rooms such as the dining room or living room we suggest adding a large floor plant to the corner of a room. We love the look of a fiddle leaf fig, an olive tree, or a bird of paradise in a cute, affordable pot from Kmart or Target.

4.    Shop Your Own Home

If you are wanting to create a new look in your home, but don’t want to spend any money at all, then we have got you covered! Shopping your home is a concept of using existing items in your own home in new ways and different rooms to create a whole new look. We recommend starting by gathering all decorative accents such as vases, books, candle, plants, trays and grouping them together on one large surface such as the kitchen bench. From there you can take pieces that were previously in another room in the house and style them up with a new combination in a different room. For example, the stack of books, candle and vase combination that you currently have on your coffee table could be added to your bedroom drawers paired with a new artwork to create a fresh new look.

5.    Update Soft Furnishings

Updating your soft furnishings in the bedroom and living room is a simple and easy way to create an entirely new style on a budget. Soft furnishings include items such as cushions, throw blankets, rugs and curtains and are a great way to add colour and texture to a space. We love switching up our cushion and throw rug combination to create a fresh new style and completely transform the look and feel of a space. We recommend getting some basic linen cushions in natural colours from stores such as Adairs or Freedom to ensure you have a good base to work with. From there head to stores such as Kmart, Target, and Big W to add coloured and textured cushions and throw blankets to the mix. We love using sage green and blush pink for Summertime and navy blue or mustard for Winter.
