Make your home cosy for winter

Guest blog by Eliza.

Winter is officially underway here in Australia and as a result we are finding ourselves wanting to spend more time indoors and in the comfort of our own home. To make your home the cosy oasis you’ve dreamed of we are sharing our top simple tips you can implement this weekend. Your home will be feeling warm, comfy and calm in no time at all!

Switch Up Your Soft Furnishings

The easiest way to update your home from Summer to Winter is to switch out your soft furnishings in the bedroom and living room. In Summer we tend to lean towards lighter fabrics such as cotton and linen, but these simply won’t keep us warm and cosy on a cold winter’s night. We suggest opting for throw blankets in materials such as fleece, faux fur or wool are perfect for creating warmth and snuggling under. We also love changing our cushions to the winter materials mentioned above and choosing colours that evoke warmth such as a deep olive green, mustard, ochre or a dusty rose.

Introduce A New Scent

Scents can evoke different emotions and feelings and work perfectly to set the mood in a space. To create a warm and cosy atmosphere in your home we recommend choosing scents that have woody and deep floral undertones and placing them in areas such as the living room, entryway, hallway and bedroom. We love scents with notes of sandalwood, caramel, bergamot, rose or patchouli. Scent is a simple and easy way to add a cosy vibe to your home as you can simply place a diffuser in a room, spritz a room spray in a space or light a candle of an evening.

Think About Lighting

Lighting is also a great way to set the mood in a space and evoke a certain vibe or atmosphere. To create a warm and cosy feel in your home we suggest avoiding bright overhead lighting in the evening and instead opt for task lighting such as floor lamps, table lamps and bedside table lamps. Ensure you have warm toned globes in your lamps to give off a golden hue throughout the space.

Create A Calm And Organised Space

Here at Organised Simplicity, we couldn’t share tips about creating the perfect home without some mention of organisation, right? We believe that in order to have a cosy and relaxing home, the space needs to be free of clutter. Throughout winter our homes can have a build-up of clutter as there are bulkier items coming through the door such as jackets, coats, blankets or scarves and beanies if you live in a colder climate. Ensure the extra layers of clothing and soft furnishings have a designated place to be dropped when entering the house and stored until used again. We suggest making space in a cupboard near your entryway or garage entrance to store bulkier jackets and placing a tray or basket close by for winter accessories. We also love adding a beautiful basket to the living room and folding up some cosy blankets for easy access and storage.

Update Your Bedding

The bedroom is an area of the home that you can create the ultimate cosy space as the main purpose is for snuggling down, relaxing and sleeping. We suggest switching your quilt insert to a warm winter insert which will result in a warm night’s sleep and a fluffier overall look to the bed. We also love opting for flannelette sheets or an ultra-soft cotton to create a cosy and warm feeling as you sleep. Top this off with some fluffy throw rugs and cushions in tones of dusty rose and ochre for the ultimate cosy bed setup.
